Vera New

Vera Mae Whorton New, age 88, of Centre, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 7, 2016. She was born in Foster’s Mill, Georgia, had 11 siblings and lived most of her adult life in the Whorton community of Cherokee County. Services will be held Wednesday, March 9th at 3 pm at Perry Funeral Home with Rev Jimmy Harrison officiating. Family will receive friends from 2-3 pm on Wednesday. Burial will follow in Noah Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Debra Borden (Lloyd); son, Rev. Douglas New; grandchildren, Natasha Borden Tidmore (Tim), Rev. Adam Borden (Angel), Kelly New, and Stephen New (Stephanie); great-grandchildren, Will Tidmore, Tyler Tidmore, Abigail Borden, Emme New, and Adelyn Borden; brothers, Charlie Whorton (Carolyn) and Thurman Whorton (Hellon); sister, Thelma Whorton Dobbs; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burnett Hugh New; parents, Ellis and Maybelle Lumsden Whorton; brothers, Connor, Hobart, J.T., John F., Luther, and Perry; sisters, Onie Whorton and Mary Ann Whorton Steed; daughter-in-law, Marcia Bannister New, and great-grandson, Bronson Max New. Pallbearers include: Randy Whorton, Craig Young, Kenneth Dobbs, Tyler Tidmore, Will Tidmore, Sid Borden. Vera was saved at a young age and was a former member of Noah Baptist Church and New Bethel Baptist Church, both in her home community. She was a loving wife and faithful Christian mother, a student of the Bible, a member of the church choir and a caring neighbor. She always had beautiful flowers in her yard and enjoyed painting as a hobby. Vera was a homemaker and worked for a short time in the Centre Elementary School cafeteria. Her greatest joy was spending time with the love of her life, Hugh. She loved to play with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and a strong, hard worker. The many fond memories of her are not only shared by her immediate family but by her many nieces and nephews that spent time at her home. During the last ten years of her life, Alzheimers/dementia robbed her and her family of the person we knew her to be. We will cherish the strength, values and trust in, as she would say, “The Almighty”, she demonstrated in her daily life.
