Woodrow Rains

Mr. Woodrow Wilson Rains, 90 of Centre, passed away Tuesday, March 9th 2010. Funeral services will be held Friday at 4 P.M. at the Centre First Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Wright and Rev. Melvyn Salter officiating. Burial will follow in Cherokee Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 until 3:30 Friday. Survivors include his wife, Venice Tucker Rains; son, Ronnie Rains, Centre; daughters, Gail Hayes and Freida (Andy) Ellis of Centre; sisters, Ethel Sutton of Acworth, GA and Willie Mae Jordan of Centre; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Pauline Stimpson and Nettie Minnis; son-in-law, Kelley Hayes and great-grandson, Ian Andy Ellis. Pallbearers: Phillip Abney, Earl Acker, Ben Arnold, Jimmy Griffith, Gary Jordan, Tom LeCroy, Tommy Minnix, Jack Morgan, Tony Stimpson, Vince Studdard and Chris Whorton. Honorary Pallbearers: Cherokee County Farmers Federation-officers & directors (Past & Present), Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation Employees and Supervisors, Jack Morgan’s Sunday School Class; Centre Lions Club; Centre City Council, Piggly Wiggly Breakfast Club, Wallace Lyons and Al Shumaker. Mr. Rains was a native of Cherokee County, the son of the late Gus and Etta Mae Mackey Rains and was a veteran of WWII. He was a retired farmer and was active in many civic and farming organizations. He served as county president and state director of Alabama Farmers Federation. He also served as supervisor of Cherokee County Soil and Water Conservation District for 50 years. He was an outstanding member of the Centre Lions Club for over 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 62. Woodrow served as a councilman for the city of Centre. He was a faithful member of the Centre First Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School Director, teacher, building financial committee and deacon. He socialized with fellow farmers, the young at heart and the Piggly Wiggly Breakfast Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Centre. PDF Printable Version
